Raining like Hell.

I took a day off today. My knees were starting to feel a little stiff anyway.
With luck, the weather will be reasonable tomorrow and I can get some
miles in early. It's good to run early in the day on a weekend. You get
the roads to yourself.

Took a day off, too. Yesterday I ran 4.1 K. "fartlek" (I don't know where the word comes from): that is, a 100 meter sprint followed by a 100 meter jog followed by another 100 meter sprint, etcetera.
I guess it was too much. My whole body aches.

Thanks to George for pointing me to this thread. Perfect timing for me.

My 2008 goals :
1)Run 1000 miles.
George and I think alike re: treadmills. They don't count.
AND I like his never run in dangerous places but --too bad-- it's Central Park in the dark. Razz
I did, according to myRunning Ahead log 861.3 last year and, despite all the adulation I received from completing the marathon in November, I feel I could have done many more miles at faster speeds. My training classes taught me an awful lot, but came too late to make much difference in November. I did set a new Personal Record for a 10K in December without even trying very hard.

Speaking of awful, I have been sick for the past ten days, a result of being on a plane with a bunch of sick children and, I kid you not, a sneezing cat.
To add to my misery, the weather has been BEE YOU TEA FULL. And I have not run a step officially this year. Not a foot. (I am not going to count running for the bus the day before yesterday- a distance of some 200 yards which I completed with only the slightest of coughing fits.

Goal 2)
Break all of the following personal records:
4 Mi 37:15 9:19
5 Mi 47:20 9:28 5 Miles
10 km 59:38 9:36
9.3 Mi 1:34:18 10:09
Half Marathon 2:13:47 10:13
Marathon 5:27:47 12:31

Goal 3) Get fit with more weight training.
I'll mark my progress here on Presses, Push-ups, etc.
Run SMTWF Workout MTWT

Goal 4) Return to my yogic roots.
I attended three yoga classes while on vacation and really realized how much I missed the feeling of peacefulness while in a pose. Also, getting stretched out a little can't hurt my hamstrings any.

I love saying "fartlek".
FARTLEK! FARTLEK! FARTLEK! FARTLEK! FARTLEK! FARTLEK! FARTLEK!

Heehee.

There's nothing I don't like better than a long run.
I figured out where 1000 miles would take me. From Central Park by the statue, going North, my turnaround point will be a couple of miles outside of Devereaux, Maine. Map

I start tomorrow rain or shine.

Fartlek! We'll all say it! Smile

10 reps again yesterday. Today I get blood drawn for a fasting test. Doc is checking not only thyroid (I've been on HRT for thyroid for over a decade) but also for insulin resistance. If so, then onto some other med.

Hence, the need to exercise. I wanna make my own damn insulin!

Other little tricks. I have been trying to watch the food intake as well as exercise and yesterday I engaged in a little game with myself called "Out of Sight, Out of Mind". As in, don't take out the work snack (it was dried corn, verra yummy) until ready to eat it. As opposed to having it sit on the desk. It worked. While I still had el snacko, I did it at about 11:15 rather than my usual 10 AM or so. I have been cutting back the daytime stuff and this is another way to do that. I know it's silly, but it works, so who am I to complain or question it?

In other news, we've dumped a lot of junk food into the back yard. Pop tarts really sail far if you throw them end over end. The starlings were feasting this morning. I fear we will have overweight song birds, but better them than me.

Tonight: leg exercises! And tonight -- clean up the exercise nook, make it nice and pretty and uncluttered. Ready for anything.

Jes--

"Insulin resistant" doesn't mean you're not making insulin. It means for some reason you're not able to use the insulin you make.

Mr. Noddy--diabetic at that time for 25 years--was found to be insulin resistant, put on Actos, and immediately started losing weight and feeling better.

********

My exercise schedule is still very haphazard, but I've had moments today where I've felt an urge to Rise, Go Forth, and Move Vigorously--at least for short periods of time.

I'm also sleeping more soundly and have a bit more patience in my waking hours.

Refinement for January --

Walk on even days, lift on odd days. It works better with my goofy eating plan.

Jan 7, Jan 1 -- shoulders, abs, back, chest (check)
Jan 8, Jan 2 -- treadmill 4.0 miles with varying elevation, 650 calories avg, 68 mins avg (check)
Jan 9, Jan 3 -- biceps, triceps, quads, hamstrings (check)
Jan 10, Jan 4 -- treadmill 4.0 miles with varying elevation, 630 calories avg, 67 mins avg (check)
Jan 11, Jan 5 -- calves, gluts, inner and outer thighs (ckeck)
Jan 12, Dec 31 -- treadmill 4.0 miles with varying elevation, 675 calories avg, 68 mins avg (check)

Got out for an early jog today, though not as early as I would have liked.
As I went past the entrance to the Middlesex Fells, there was a guy getting
out of a car with his dog. The dog was leashed. It struck me how few dogs
I see running around loose these days. The leash laws must be working. I
like dogs, but for runners, they pose a triple threat. They can bite you, you
can fall over them, or you can slip on their poo. I've experienced all three.

Well, my houseguest went home yesterday and my new exercise tapes (Joyce Vedral!) arrived today, so I've begun in earnest now. Did lower body today, and it'll be the elliptical and abs tomorrow. I'm feeling motivated!

I went to a holiday party in early december. The walls of the ladies room were floor to ceiling mirrors. I won't be seeing that vision again.

Floor to ceiling mirrors in a restroom?

That should be a sig line.

Yesterday, we went for a walk and I also did some work on the bike, in addition to the usual stuff. Today we'll walk again, as snow is threatening and it won't be so pleasant.

Oh and I can see a hint of a waistline, which is always my first sign that I'm getting into shape.

When I was just starting out as a computer programmer at Ma Bell, I
distractedly wandered into the wrong rest room at work. I got out of there
in a hurry, hoping no one had seen me. Then I heard a female coworker's
voice say "To boldly go where no man has gone before." Busted.

After bouncing on an exercise ball yesterday, I have pangs in twinges in muscles that have never panged or twinged before.

Pain is not weakness leaving the body. Pain is weakness hanging on to the fat cells with metaphorical fingernails.
