@Stradee,
I've no idea right now, Stradee. But, this will seem (normal) in no time at all. Just like my signature suggests.

All creaked for another tree asmiling (Grin)

Hullo, folks. Lucky me -- got the old steam-driven 'puter to let me online again. Mixed blessing, though, in view of this new website.

I posted something along these lines on another thread and some of you may have received an e-mail from me, but inasmuch as I don't have all of you in my address book, I may as well as say it again here:

I'm outta here. Look for me anywhere except on this here ersatz A2K. This thing is an abomination. For me, A2K is just as dead as Abuzz. I miss them both already. And please don't tell me to give it time and get to know the new site. If I want to give myself a tiresome tutorial, I'm sure I can figure out how all these bells and whistles work. That's not the point. The point is it's not fun any more. It's more like work. A2k, the A2k I knew and loved since it first came into being, no longer exists. Again, like Abuzz, it's dead. R.I.P.

It's been great knowing all of you dedicated environmentalists and I wish you the best of everything in your future endeavors. Save trees. Love. Laugh. Remember me.

Adios, amigos.

The Merry One

@Stradee,
Hi Stradee. The BBC code is emoticons/bold/image - all that good stuff - the coding for images and links ...

~~~
You and your 300 friends have supported 2,910,687.0 square feet!
Marine Wetlands habitat supported: 215,039.1 square feet.
American Prairie habitat supported: 67,730.0 square feet.
Rainforest habitat supported: 2,627,918.0 square feet.
~~~

you can enable the BBC Code on the posts where you want to do the fancy stuff - and you don't want to type the code in manually.

@teenyboone,
Just in case; my email address is [email protected]. If anyone has any ideas, starts any new threads, starts a yahoo group, where we can all be more comfortable, please include me. My hand surgery is scheduled for September 11Th. Will be offline for 6-8 weeks. Right arm will be in a sling.
I can be reached at:

Mrs. Sharon G. Boone(Teeny)
PO Box 1243
Asbury Park, NJ 07712
732-685-5885-cell

I'll also be moving in 10 days back to Neptune, but I'll keep my PO Box. I've had it for 17 years and plan to keep it, so the address is good. I plan on keeping my regular land line, too but you never know. Keep me in mind on 9/11. Birthday is 8/29, okay. Turning 64! Just happy to be here!

@danon5,
Dan, the colors are trippy and not difficult to place in a posting. Just click the color and you'll see a series of codes. Look for the elongated line and begin typing from that. Hope i explained right. Confused Beth, a hug right back to ya. Smile
Merry, sorry to see you're leaving a2k. Wish you'd give the new format a chance though. Smile

@Stradee,
The Picoides arcticus alarm clock, sounded like a clicking noise.
Clicked twice.
Hello Stradee, danon5 and others. Teenyboone, my thoughts and best wishes in regards to your surgery.
Ehbeth-funny you mention homemmade concoctions. My neighbor, who, in his eighties, still makes his own wine. Last month he gave me a bottle of his homemade wine, with a piece of identifying masking tape dated from the early nineteen seventies. Looks like a fine whiskey. I'm reluctant to try it.

@alex240101,
I'm here, but will have to begin to learn this new format. Sorry about MA splitting. Seems premature, but I have yet to try to learn anything. If I get too frustrated, I may do something weird too. But I found you guys by using the search feature. Will back up on this thread one of these days to get referral to where to go to learn the new system, and to pick up my avatar.

Of course, I am not averse to cheating and begging. Anyone (ehBeth?) want to point me in the direction of a good place to begin?

CLIMATE SCIENCE: Cause of Death
H. Jesse Smith

During the mass extinction event that occurred 200 million years ago, at the end of the Triassic Period, around half of all extant species vanished. In the marine realm, about 20% of all families and more than 90% of the genera in some groups of organisms disappeared. What caused that catastrophe? One hypothesis is that elevated atmospheric CO2 was the culprit, but evidence of that cause has been elusive. Hautmann et al. present data indicating that ocean acidification, possibly caused by high rates of magmatic CO2 degassing and thermal dissociation of marine gas hydrates, was responsible for the burst of marine extinctions. They show that carbonate sedimentation was interrupted globally, and that organisms that had skeletons of aragonite or high-Mg calcite were preferentially affected. Thus, it seems that high concentrations of atmospheric CO2 were in fact the proximal cause of the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event, a conclusion that has direct bearing on efforts to understand what may be the consequences of the buildup of atmospheric CO2 that now is underway. -- HJS

@sumac,
Power Failure
A court defeat for the EPA leaves it up to Congress to tackle utilities' air pollution.

Thursday, August 14, 2008; A16

THE BUSH administration is not known for undying concern for the environment in general or clean air in particular. That's why it was a stunning setback when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia last month struck down the administration's single boldest move in favor of clean air: a regulation from its Environmental Protection Agency that sought to clean up the air from power plants. In an odd twist, the ruling was handed down on the same day the EPA opted to avoid issuing rules to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. In both cases, the action now turns to Congress.

What the court invalidated because of "fatal flaws" was the Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR). This 2005 directive from the EPA sought to reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide from power plants in one state that then settle downwind in another. The regulation covered the District of Columbia and 28 states in the Midwest and the East. Sulfur dioxide would have been cut by 70 percent, and nitrogen oxide by 60 percent from 2003 levels, starting in 2015, using a cap-and-trade system. Utility companies, and even states such as North Carolina, picked at pieces of the rule in lawsuits, from the equity of the distribution of emission allowances to the lack of assurance that upwind states would take measures to reduce pollution downwind.

For six years, Sen. Thomas R. Carper (D-Del.) has been trying to pass legislation similar to, but more far-reaching, than CAIR. The Senate isn't planning to consider it until next year. The Democratic-controlled 110th Congress roared into Washington last year promising aggressive action on the environment and climate change. It succeeded in boosting motor vehicle fuel economy and increasing the amount of renewable fuels in the fuel supply. And that's about it. Passage of Mr. Carper's bill, which would make regulation of pollutants from the power sector nationwide a matter of law rather than agency rules (as with CAIR), could be the next Congress's chance to fulfill the promise of aggressive action.

@sumac,

Q: Where are the butterflies? In past years, the yard has been full of them, beginning in early spring. This year, there are two or three at a time, and they have just begun to appear. There is little variety. What's up? -- Lynn Kibler

A: I have been wondering the same thing. Biologist Arthur Shapiro of the University of California at Davis, who has been studying butterflies as a career and hobby for almost 40 years, has noted a decrease. According to the National Wildlife Federation, other lepidopterists share Shapiro's concern. Worldwide, many butterfly species have begun to falter and disappear. In this country, the Fish and Wildlife Service has designated 23 species as endangered or threatened.

This is more than an aesthetic loss. Butterflies play a key role in plant reproduction, transporting pollen from flower to flower. They provide food for birds and other insects. Loss of habitat is a primary cause for their decline.

You can help.

The answer is to create a habitat that is sustaining to them.
