There are plenty of w_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ in my school who are exceptionally clever but some are just too lazy to reveal it.

I can't think of what word to fill in the blank. Can somebody please help?

Many thanks.

women?

Does the number of underscore characters after the initial W indicate the number of letters, like a crossword clue?

"clever" sounds so British - do you mean smart or intelligent?

What's wrong with (a) "clever" and (b) "sounding British", Sullyfish? We did invent the English language after all!

"Smart" means "tidily or neatly dressed".

Once again, Sullyfish, you have missed the point of the question.

Hi Contrex

The word starts with 'w' followed by the missing letters indicated by the lines.

w_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I see a w followed by 10 "lines". So it is an 11 letter word starting with w?

"Wallflowers" would fit. Used metaphorically, the word means a shy or lazy person who is content to remain quietly at the edge of things and let others do the speaking and get the glory.

I was not being serious, YL. Wanker is a Briticism which means someone who masturbates obsessively--it is a term of contempt.

It mainly means a pompous or self-important male person.
