We were all in high spirits and were looking forward to participating in all the activities and ceremonies with our utmost sincere hearts and minds. There were a total of 3 groups attending various ceremonies.

Could someone please improve on the above sentence femur me? Should it be 'was' or 'were'?

Many thanks.

It should be "was," although many native English speakers might say were.

Your first sentence is fine--up to a point. We were all in high spirits and were looking forward to participating in all the activities and ceremonies with our utmost sincere hearts and minds. The bold-face portion is just goofy--English speakers would not use a construction like that. As brevity is virtue in any language, you could replace all of that nonsense with the single word "enthusiasm."

We were all in high spirits and were looking forward to participating in all the activities and ceremonies with enthusiasm.
