"Ka Bopha did not set out to fatally beat her son," Kay Noul said by telephone.

I don't think 'by' is the correct preposition. I think it should be 'on the telephone'. Am I right?

Many thanks.

I think "on the" is better for this particular sentence.

However,

I ordered a book by telephone.

I enquired about plane tickets over the telephone.

... are all OK.

We can communicate by email.

We can communicate by voice mail.

We can respond by telephone.

"by telephone" would indicate the method of communication.

That sounds a bit clumsy. I would say, "I ordered a book by phone".

I muchly prefer:

"Ka Bopha did not set out to fatally beat her son," Kay Noul said, "by telephone".
