If there are two boys standing under a tree, do we say "Who is standing under the tree" or "Who are standing under the tree" ?

Many thanks.

"There are two boys who are standing under a tree" would be correct.

Thanks. But the question is "Who is standing under the tree?" or "Who are standing under the tree?" (Which is the correct question in response to the above answer?)

Thanks again.

Ah, well that changes things.

Both of these are correct:

Who is standing under the tree?
Who are the boys standing under the tree?

So no matter how many boys are standing under the tree, the question should be 'Who is standing under the tree?' Did I get you correctly? By the way should it be 'Did I get you correct?'

Many thanks.

It's "Who IS standing under the tree?", but it's "Who ARE they?"... go figure!

and it's "correctly"...

Yes, you're right. No matter how many people are standing under the tree, the question would be "Who is standing under the tree?"
