I spoke to him on/over the phone.
I believe 'on' is correct, but is 'over' also acceptable?
Many thanks.
in that example "on" is correct...
"over" could be used thusly:
I gave him directions over the phone.
Both on and over are common usage for me. I suggest either is acceptable but "over" is slightly less acceptable to me. "Over the phone" would be more acceptable to my parents generation.
"On the phone" tells more about what kind of communication "I" used.
"I spoke to him on the phone, then I emailed him later."
"Over the phone" is somewhat old-fashioned.
Thanks for all your replies.
