I am desperately trying to find out some information about mylograms.
Some background on my situation:
I fell down a spiral staircase 16 years ago and went thru 3+ years of physical therapy. It seemed that over the years to come I would have off and on periods that I would battle with pain and then be somewhat okay for periods of time. In late 2004 I started to see a Neurologist that treated me with pain killers which I reluctantly used occasionally because of my fear of just masking pain and possibly doing more harm, obviously I got nowhere with him.
I began to see a chiropractor who had actually gave me some relief, but this was just temporary.
Then last September I reached the point of such excruciating pain that I could no longer perform everyday functions such as brushing my teeth or washing my hair, or doing anything for that matter, let's not get into the headaches. So I started to see an Orthopedic Surgeon has now suggested, after multiple cortisone shots, 1 shoulder and 3 cervical, and no significant benefits from them, that I have a mylogram done. Because of the variables of multiple neck problems - a 2005 MRI revealed at that time - Bulging annulus at C3-C4, Narrowing with eccentric broad based protrusion effacing the thecal sac and spinal cord at C4-C5, they list C5-C6 as unremarkable, so it skips! Then a right paracentral disc protrusion with increased signal compatible with an annular tear C6-C7. At C4-C5 there is moderate foraminal osteophytes bilaterally. Now, it's not only my neck I am contending with, but as we have found out there is also an overlapping injury in my shoulder that has become more prominent in the past 3 years.
The last MIRI in 2006 showed a markedly continual progression from the 2005 MRI. I have never heard of a mylogram before and have read some info that concerns me as far as side effects and complications of a mylogram. What am I to think when I read all these possible side effects, ( IE Seizures??) I don't know what to do, as I have no other alternatives anymore to surgery as my Orthopedic Surg. has told me. I already have muscular atrophy in my right arm and continual pain, so it does seem like I really don't have much choice anymore. I am only 39 years old, and I think "Where will I be if I don't follow thru with this come another 10- 20 yrs?" Can you please give me some viable idea of the ratio of side effects with mylograms, and what should be my honest concerns with complications?
Thank you very much,
Fiona
We are not medical doctors here - and even if one or two do post once in a while, it isn't appropriate that they give you medical advice here. Are you being seen at a good university affiliated medical center?
Thank you for your post, I realize that I would be probably not be getting info from doctors, but was looking for other people who may have had primary experience with having a mylogram. I would not take posts to my question as medical advice, but just as additional reference to what I have already researched.
