I have never had flu shots but this year I have gotten the flu about four times in as many months. Un-*******-believable! I read through a number of webpages on the subject and it seems the upside is much larger than the downside. Comments, personal/professional experience?
I get one every year. Can't remember the last time I had a bad flu.

" the flu" is often used to describe all kinds of more or less nasty "flu-like" symptoms .
a flu-shot will only offer LIMITED protection against some of the nastier types of the flu virus .
it certainly does not offer universal protection .
one problem is that the "flu shot" has to be developed before it is known what types of the virus will appear during the season - a bit of educated guessing .
we've had flu shots for a number of years and have certainly had our share of colds and flu-like symptoms , but i don't think we've had the "real flu" - it'll often put you out of commision for a few days to several weeks and certainly can get VERY NASTY !

FLU AND FLU SHOTS
I too, like marty, get them every year....however, I do remember the last time I did get the flu, hence the attentiveness to getting them.
something that puts you out of commission for 2-3 days is not the flu.
The flu makes you feel like dying for a few days, really bad for another week, and keeps you from feeling even 80% for a month.
Well maybe I did not / do not have the flu and maybe flu shots won't help.
I can say one of these latest times I got flu-like symptoms I was wiped-out for about two weeks, but the other times it's been shorter. This time, although I am not sure how it will pan out, it's been about four days and I was wiped out for two and recovery-ish for two.
Pisses me off 'cause I'm pretty sure this time it was a girl from work, who although sick and coughing etc would not go home.
My wife and I both had bad episodes with the flu back in the '80s. Ever since we've gotten the flu shot, usually in October.
sorry chumly, I was responding to hamburger saying it can last 2-3 days sometimes.
no, if you felt awful for 2 weeks, that's bad, probably took you longer to really feel great.
Of course, there might be milder strains, but the flu can make your entire body ache and you literally cannot get out of bed. Last time I was that sick I remember thinking if I was a geriatric I could have died.
anyway, hope you feel well again soon.
oh...downside of flu shots?
Well, the shot is different every year. The only think I personally notice is most of the time, the evening after getting it, my heart rate is slightly increase, not by much, up to maybe 90-100. It's gone by morning. I just take it easy that evening and go to bed early.
This year, no side effects.
Thanks!
If you like a bit of humors you might have a look see at this thread; the flu has sharpened my wit (or at least it's as good an excuse as any other).

had our flushots on tuesday - a bit of itching for the first 24 hours -
took it easy and didn't go swimming next day - today , feeling fine and went for morning swim
(freezing rain on thursday , so we staid in  )
I had a flu shot on Saturday the 8th, all seems OK.
The doctor had this skin peeling off his lip which he did not seem to niotce......very weird and creepy. It was a walk-in clinic.
Yep, got my flu shot yesterday too, Chumly. No sensitivity at all. I'll be looking for the same district health nurse next year for sure (walk-in clinic here too, at the mall).
