Hi
She asked me to go so I went.
The shops were closed so I couldn't buy anything.
Do I need a comma in each of the above sentences? If not, when is a comma used when 'so' is used?

Yes, both sentences need commas because each clause has a subject and verb. The "so" isn't really an issue.
