Which preposition should I use?

Tom sets his alarm for 8.00 am.

He set his alarm to go off at 8.00 am.

there is an interesting phillosophical debate about why we say an alarm
"goes off" when it actually "comes on".
Yoong, I dont know if that will make sense to a non english speaker so ignore it if it doesn't.
