i was just looking up some basic info on greece to start off.

I took a course on ancient Greek history while in college. We didn't have a textbook and the content of the course was a bit jumbled and it didn't help that I hadn't received a good foundation in ancient history while in high school.
I do however, recall that my professor pointed out that the Greeks lived on marginal land- not suited for much in the way agriculture (it certainly wasn't Egypt or Mesopotamia) and the Greeks were noted for being colonizers. But at the same time the Greeks had a fear of the sea- they traveled the sea, but they didn't like doing so.
