A Chinese parliamentarian [/B]called for his country to diversify its reserves out of "weak" currencies like the dollar and another official suggested that the dollar's status as a reserve currency was "shaky". The greenback reached $2.10 against the pound and a new record of $1.47 against the euro, before recovering slightly.

Can I used 'called upon' in place of 'call for'?

Many thanks.
