in the sentence "that is not just a theory---there were many times in my administration when an early confrontation led to far less fighting down the road" & "if Iraq does not disarm peacefuly at this junction,it will be disarmed down the road",what is the meaning of " down the road"?

Down the road, in this context means - a later point in time.
