Itchy fingers in cold temperatures

Reply Thu 15 Nov, 2007 10:01 am
Recently, I've been getting really itchy fingertips in cold temperatures. It starts off mildly itchy, then gets really painfully itchy that it hurts to scratch, but I must do it anyways. It only seems to happen at the onset of cold temperatures. Does anyone have anything like this and what can I do?

Hmmm... have you ever had frostbite? I did (I was an especially stupid teenager) and that's sort of the feeling I get in the frostbit fingertips if I'm not careful with them.

I noticed that about 10 years ago for the first time.
(Fingers got really 'thick', I couldn't bend them, the skin 'broke open' ....)

Since those days I use a hand cream very high in ... uric acid.

Helps quite a lot.

had a touch of frostbite in my heels as a teenager . so in fall and spring - particularly once i get into bed - my heels start itching badly .
i found that rubbing in VICKS VAPORUB gets it under control quickly .

@amph1bius,
I am 51 and I go outside in 40 and below temps and it happens. I go inside, my hands turn red from the knuckles down and my palms too. Then the intense itching builds until all you can do it scratch. Running warm water does not help. Only time and I've been unsuccessful in finding out what it is.

@ecauto,
That sounds like it might be chilblains:

Quote:
Chilblains are the painful inflammation of small blood vessels in your skin that occur in response to sudden warming from cold temperatures. Also known as pernio, chilblains can cause itching, red patches, swelling and blistering on extremities, such as on your toes, fingers, ears and nose.
