Is 'news' an uncountable noun? I would think so, but a friend of mine says it is plural in form but should be used with a singular verb.

Is he correct?

Many thanks.

Yes, news is an uncountable noun. But look at these two sentences:

The stories in the news today are bad.

The news in the paper is bad.

In the first sentence, "are" refers to "stories". In the 2nd, "is" refers to "news".

Also, you might say, "There are three gnus grazing on the plain."

Gus thinks he's funny. He is in the singular.

So, McG, are you saying that no gnus is good gnus?

Gnus are fine as long as they're potty-trained. Nothing is more annoying than having to line the kitchen floor every day with gnus papers.

Hi

My question is about 'news', not 'gnus'. I don't care about the latter.
