The 54 year old Huang came to Cambridge at the invitation of the 72 year old Joseph Needham. Together the two were to find the answer to what was already known as Joseph Needham's Puzzle. It had baffled the science historian for quite a long time: Why was it that the Chinese had lagged behind all of a sudden? Like many academics of the 20th century China, massive social unrest, endless humiliations of the nation made Huang want to find out the real cause of it in Chinese history.
May I know if the grammar of the sentence in bold type is correct or not?
Huang, like many academics of 20th-century China, wanted to find the real cause of the endless social humiliations and massive social unrest which had occurred throughout Chinese history.
That would be a little better, but I am sure there are others here who could shape your words into a more acceptable fashion.
Let's wait.
One of the points being made by gustavratzenhofer is that the person's name (Huang) should be closer to the phrase describing him (like many academics of 20th Century China).
I bet he is huang like a canary. You know what they say about those Chinese scholars.
