I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis at age 46. I had fractured by foot by just stepping down so the doctor went looking for the answer "why". Thought I was pretty healthy and exercised regularly. He recommended the Forteo based on my T scores (2.9 in my hips, spine if fine) I have been taking Forteo for 6 months and also have recently seen and endocrinologist. He found I have an extreme Vitamin D difficiancy. Now taking supplements as well as a prescribed Vitamin D bi-monthly. I have noticed the leg cramps seem to be increasing and was curious for those who have been on this drug for longer have noticed the same? Also have gained 30 lbs. which is killing me, no matter what I do it won't come off.
Vitamin D defiency and Forteo
I too am taken FORTEO. (about 4 months) Because I was found to be Vitamin D deficient I was put on Calcitriol 0.25mcgs three times a day. I had to cut down to 1 a day because of severe itching. I was wondering if you or anyone else has experienced this?
Forteo
I take 1500mg of calcium supplement a day. I also take a prescription Vitamin d twice a month. I have not experienced any other problems. What were your scores and how old are you? My friend a physical therapist described my T scores as ones she would see in her patients that are in the 65-70 yoa range.
Forteo
I have a daughter, age 20, diagnosed with osteoporosis in both her spine and pelvis due to a previous eating disorder. The endocrinologist has prescribed Forteo, but I am unable to find any studies that use pre-menopausal women with this medication. Calcium supplements/ exercise are not helping, so Forteo seems to be our only final hope. Any thoughts?

I read allot about Forteo before I began the injections. I simply concluded that they don't know everything any drug will cause so I am taking my chances. It seems to be the only thing available to help build bone, not just strengthen it. Now though I am taking Synthroid and that takes calcium away so I am getting a double wammy on losing bone. The vitamin D deficiancy was the only thing that could have led to my bone loss. My diet and exercise were very good.
Forteo
I have decided to risk a 2 year trial of Forteo, although I have reservations about the lack of time and testing on humans. We all seem to have the same story of severe osteoporosis and trying the traditional meds. After 2 weeks I still see no side effects but it concerns me that some people don't experience side effects for months. I realize it is a risk but the broken bone I had was difficult to heal. I travel often and decided to purchase a medi-fridge usually used for diabetes meds. It comes with a house current adapter as well as a 12 v dc (auto socket) connector. That could be used on an airplane as well as your auto? The Medi-Fridge says it will stay at proper temp for 6 hours after you have unplugged it. You can find it on the internet:
