"It's time that you get a haircut."
"It's time that you got a haircut."

In BrE, sentence is correct. However is sentence 1 allowed in AmE?

Many thanks.

Why is #1 'incorrect', Contrex?

Interesting. Another BrE/AmE difference?

1. is not correct as far as I'm concerned.

Its time for you TO GET a haircut.

Well that's interesting.
Subjunctive isn't it.
But most unusual.

Don't forget, in all this high-faluting parsing and analysis, that Yoong Liat is a learner. It's sometimes hard to pitch the answer just right.

Or am I being patronising? Embarrassed

"Get me to the church on time"

"It's important that I get to the church on time"

Maybe not so unusual as I thought at first.

NEVER

Embarrassed

The subjunctive is but one choice for speakers, McTag. The subjunctive illustrates a more doubtful demeanor but we don't always have to use that which shows great doubt if we don't mean to express great doubt.

We don't stick to grammar rules for the sole purpose of fulfilling grammar rules, rather we use grammatical meanings to express ourselves in language.
