Thousands in US anti-war protests

Anti-war protest in San Francisco 27/10/07

Tens of thousands of people have taken part in demonstrations against the war in Iraq in cities across the US.

Rallies took place in a dozen cities, with the biggest crowds gathering in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

They were timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of a vote by the US Senate to authorise the Iraq invasion.

Those taking part, who included relatives of servicemen fighting in Iraq, urged the US congress to cut off funding for the war.

The 'national day of action' was called by the United for Peace and Justice coalition...

Seeing as how you adressed me with a "why don't you....?

Why don't you just take it easy. Let it all float by. Get your nose into Gibbon where, with a little persistance, a quality you admire, or so you once said, you will discover that it doesn't matter a shite what you think and if it did they wouldn't have let you think it.

Lazy evenings with old Eddie describing how all this lot came about. Savouring some of his sentences as one might do a nice wine. The pleasures of the flesh are behind you and those of the mind will be of service to you more than you know.

Discover the magic of words.

There were 18,000 at the Bolton/Aston Villa match today and everybody was complaining about the poor attedance.

The figure for the Chicagoland demo suggests a good deal of apathy in that area. It has nearly 10,000,000 people in it I gather.

But the report I read said that there was a "good deal more" at the one in SF.

It left us to decide what a "good deal more" means.

And that suggests that the writer was being positive and putting a spin on things which is a matter of consequence when you remember that the 10,000 figure was "estimated".

What percentage of people at any rally are there for the social reasons of soaking up the proverbial Hoopla; talk to strangers; groove?

I don't know but our most famous protester was called"Swampy" and he was protesting about the building of a new runway at Manchester Airport.

When the TV crews tracked him down he was in an underground tunnel where the proposed new runway is now with six young ladies who had just majored in proper planetary management.

In a string vest too.

If there are to be bigger rallies, they will have to revive the draft. Right now, the public may view the war negatively, but complacency is the order of the day.

I think a draft would be good for the country. Not for an individual's plans, but that's not what drafts are for.

Yes, there would be protests against a draft, but if the draft was for any male after high school, and before college, there would not be the same type of college protests like during the Vietnam Era.

Don't other countries have drafts? Why do so many people think that male citizens should not serve their country for a couple of years?

I would love to see the draft. That would be the quickest way to galvanize the public and end the war.

The war would end, but I believe not because it would galvanize the public. It would wake up the rest of the world to: Don't Tread On Me.

With a draft, the world would tiptoe around the U.S. They would not want to wake up a sleeping lion.

yep. agree with ya on that edgar.

also... to me, there's entirely too much "cross advertising" going on at these things.

a.n.s.w.e.r. may or may not be the prime movers in setting up the rallies. but just because a person is anti-iraq war doesn't mean that they are pro-socialist/communist. or anti-israel. or whatever.

the whole thing is so unfocused...

there are no really high profile anti-war leaders. sorry, cindy sheehan doesn't count. poor woman makes less and less sense by the week.

I agree, get the general population back involved with what the Government does, military wise, overseas. The rank and file becomes much more circumspect of overseas adventures when it is their sons' lives at stake, rather than those nefarious "volunteers'".

If a draft comes back, however, I submit that there be exemptions only for "medical unfitness", no other. Let's get a few of the Elite Chosen Sons in the battle.

Since this nation spent 20 some odd years determining that women have the same rights as men, I submit it would not be a bad idea to include women in the draft (should it return) also.

As you can see, bringing back the draft would be difficult at best these days. The only way I can see it happening is if we get into a "total war" conflict where the entire nation would be mobilized, like WWII.

Since we have ample proof of how a "war" can be used to chip away at our civil rights.... Imagine, if you will, a total war effort and what it would do to us. The ACLU would go berserk! Ask the interned Japanese/Americans of WWII how that scenario goes. A strong central Government can easily wrap dictatorial powers around itself in times of war.

There are a lot of folks who claim President Bush is guilty of exactly that, and this is a "small war". Crap, you ain't seen nothin' yet!

Anyway, I drift from the main thrust here..... I foresee that we are going to have to rely on our highly paid military for a while.

Sure there is! You can catch glimpses of it in the evening news between "Amber Alerts" and celebrity drug/drunk busts. Laughing

yup. betcha mitt would do a quick about face on that "bombardment" thing if his boys were on the list for drafted service of their country beyond "working to get him elected because they think he'd be a great president".

i find it totally ironic that, as opposed to the vietnam era, it's the pro-war crowd that's using the "they knew what they were signing up for" rhetoric when discussing the casualties of the all volunteer military.

so, i guess that means they should get blown away for any old reason ?

the soldier has no option but to follow orders. it is up to the president to insure that those who are willing to do the nation's fighting and dying are not lost in frivolous expeditions.

NOW ITS THE SOLDIERS FAULT? Please, these kids are shedding their blood while honestly feeling that theyre doing whats best for our country. Theyre being hoodwinked by the administration. THATS where the real evil lies. Were gonna have to live with a realization that some kind of presence will be necessary over there just because we screwed it up so badly. We dont have a Time Machine, so we cant undo all the F**k ups and lies. ALl we can do is develop an orderly exit strategy and try to limit the number of further losses. Im not sure that setting up a draft is really necessary. What we need is totally new leadership with a re-focus on what the terror war is really about.

The Bush administration needs to be placed in the same dust bin of History as the Buchanan or HArding administrations.
