What do the above sentences mean?

Mary's beauty and John's cleverness are so pronounced that the qualities seem excessive and become a handicap.

Mary is so beautiful, no one thinks that she has a brain or a good heart or considerable athletic ability.

John is clever--but he's also kind and thoughtful and a skilled musician.

Also, Mary may rely on her beauty and John on his cleverness so that neither of them develop other talents.
