There have been astronauts and cosmonauts in the space station continuously for a long while now (years?). I was wondering-- what was the last date that there was no one in orbit? Do you think from now on there will always be someone in orbit?

The ISS apparently has been occupied since Nov 2, 2000. But it looks to me like MIR may have been occupied since Sept. 8, 1989. The Soyuz that took cosmonauts to MIR that day blasted off on Sept. 4th, so as far as I can determine, unless there was a gap between 1989 and 2000, the last day there was no one in space was Sept. 3, 1989. 18 years!
