Seeing a fierce dog, Shawn rang away.

Are both sentences correct? I think #!.

Unless Shawn had a bell in his or her hand, he or she ran away, I think.

Both sentences are grammatically correct.

RAN not rang.

otherwise both are suitable.

On seeing.... is perhaps more formal.

Upon seeing.... is also acceptable
