sit/sat

Fred decided to change his seat and sit/sat right at the back of the class.

Should it be 'sit' or 'sat'? I think it should be 'sit' because of the preceding 'to'.

Many thanks.

Hi Yoong

Either is correct depending on the intention of the writer.

I don't know if I can explain this but...

If the decision was to change his seat, and then the resulting action was 'sat' because 'decided' is past tense.

However, if the decision was to 'change his seat and sit at the back' and there is no actual action after the decision.

Hope that makes sense. Man, English is weird.
