Which is the correct sentence, the first with 'the' or the second without 'the'? I think the second sentence is correct because 'the' need not be repeated because of the phrase 'in the US'.

Both sentences are correct; the first is more "strictly" correct, the second is an example of a widely tolerated variation in usage.
The word "in" (after Australia) can be omitted also.
