I really felt so ashamed when I had to tell lies for them.
I really feel so ashamed when I had to tell lies for them.

Which is the correct sentence? I've a feeling that both are fine.

I think for sentence 1, the whole matter is over, but for sentence 2 'I still feel so ashamed for having had to tell lies.'

Thanks.

sentence 1 is correct because the tenses match.

sentence 2 should read:
"I really feel so ashamed that I had to tell lies for them."
