In a restaurant, the waiter will ask the customer how many persons /people are in his/her group.

Are 'persons' or 'people' interchangeable in the above sentence?

I roger that roger, although I answered the question. More info you say? People is the plural of person. 'Persons' commonly refers to individuals whereas 'people' refers to a group. Both terms are acceptable but 'persons' sounds stilted probably because most people use the term 'people' in the example cited. I'm a people person.
