What phrase is 'in this way'? An adverb phrase?

Yes, it is an adverb phrase because it is modifying the verb.

Not debating the phrase form. But it's unlikely that a native English speaker, at least one from the US, would ever utter that phrase. I would say, "Try doing it this way."
