Could someone please tell me the word which should be used to fill in the blank?

Its hooves were of gold and they were yellow in the firelight and its ears pricked like petals, as though it was ______________ .

Thanks.

While Googling for the exact phrase I found that you also posted the same question on Englishforums.com. What an interesting site! How duplicitous of you not to mention it! You have been unfaithful to us, Yoong Liat, English Tutor of Singapore!

alive? ablaze? What is your guess?

Its hooves were of gold and they were yellow in the firelight and its ears pricked like petals, as though it was ablaze.

My guess is 'ablaze', but I don't understand this part: "its ears pricked like petals" and then 'as though it ... ': why the sudden switch to 'it'.

You're right that I posted on Englishforums.com. The reason is that I need the answer urgently. I hope you're not upset by my posting on the other forum.

Thank you very much for helping me all along.

Best wishes.

Because the focus of attention has shifted back from "its" parts, its hooves, its ears, to "it" itself. I presume that "it" is a mythical golden or part-golden sculpture of a horse?

Not at all! I was teasing you! Perhaps I should have used a smiling "emoticon", except that I don't like them very much. I am grateful to you for revealing the other forum's existence.

Actually to be an English Tutor in Singapore is no big deal. A lot of Singaporeans are English tutors, believe me. To be an English teacher is somebody well-respected because they teach in schools.

I've to apologise for not letting you know that I also posted to Englishforums. I also posted to Englishclub formerly, but found the Alan, the teacher, replying it is 'correct' or 'incorrect' most of the time.

Best wishes.
