1. I ate prawn last night.

2. I ate prawns last night.

3. I had prawn(s) for dinner last night.

Should I use prawn or prawns?

How many did you eat? More than one? That should be an indication.

I had a prawn curry. This sentence indicates only one curry was eaten despite the fact that the curry may have contained more than one prawn.

I has prawns in a curry. indicates there was more than one prawn in the curry.

There are, however, some collective nouns which are not pluralised.

100 sheep.

I am concerned you are becoming dependant on A2K members for answers instead of thinking for yourself.
