I've just seen that Liat is a man by the symbol.

What is the meaning of 'man of symbol'?

Many thanks.

No ideas on this one Yoong. the sentence does not make sense to me almost as if it is unfinished. perhaps the symbol you intended did not appear.

I see that Liat is a man by the symbol

Should I address you as Yoong or Liat. In english it is traditional to write the given name, then family name. We refer to friends by their given name.

When introduced for the first time and/or using formal english I say "hello Mr Pad

I'm a Chinese living in Singapore. For Chinese names, the first word is the family name. My family name is Koh, and my given names are Yoong Liat. So you can call me Yoong Liat. Some forum members call me Yoong, while others address me as Liat. Some even address me as YL. I'm not particular about how I'm addressed. So feel free to address me in any of the three ways.

Regards.

Does it mean that the person speaking could identify Yoong as a man by the symbol used to represent him - such as an avatar.

Example: You can tell that happycat is a woman by the avatar.

I think that person uses 'symbol' wrongly because I do not have an avatar.

I was just guessing. I thought maybe you were referring to another message board, or someplace where you do have an avatar.

You have misunderstood. The sentence was used as an example--"such as" suggests that an avatar could be used, but it could be something else as well.

Your original sentence:

"I've just seen that Liat is a man by the symbol."

I have no idea what this means.

I've just heard that MM was a sex symbol.
or
I've just learned that MM was a sex symbol.

Not 'the' because that implies she was the only one. There were others.

Not a symbol of sex....a sex symbol.
