David was heading for the goalpost/goalposts.

Which word should I use?

Goalposts if he was still some way off.

Goalpost if he was just about to hit one of them.

I would like to confirm. So the ball hit the goalpost because there are two goalposts. Did I get you correctly?

Your question started "David was heading for the goalposts..."

Now you mention a ball. So what do you mean? That David "headed" the ball towards goal? Because "David was heading for the goalposts" just means he was going there.

If it was OmSigDavid the goalposts probably aren't there anymore - he shot them down if they were in his way.
