The sun rose and sunlight shone onto my face.

Is this sentence correct?

You can delete the word "sunlight", but, yes, the sentence is grammatically correct, if a little clumsy. (Repetition of "sun")

I'd add a comma after "rose." Although it's ok to leave out the comma between independent clauses when the clauses are short, I think the comma makes things clearer.

I'd also change onto to on. Don't have a reason. It would be less awkward, I think.
