What does "He had it in for Jim" mean?
I overheard the above and was trying to understand what the speaker meant. They were talking about (the subject, that is). I think they were discussing the ex-colleague that was disfavored by the manager, and I heard that phrase being used.

That means he didn't like Jim for some reason. He "bore a grudge" against him.
He had it in for Jim, he resented Jim and would go out of his way to do Jim--or Jim's reputation--harm.
