The children enjoyed being taken to the zoo.

What part of speech is 'being'?

Many thanks.

Gerund is not correct here, in my understanding. A gerund is a form of verb functioning as a noun, which is not the case here.

....or maybe "being taken" is a gerund?

Embarrassed eh, does it matter?

Sure it is... in this sentence, the verb is enjoy, and being serves as the object of the verb. Taken to the zoo is an adjectival phrase (built on the past participle of to take) modifying being.

Yoong Liat's sentence is similar to the example provided in Section 20 of this this grammar site.

As for whether it matters... I guess that's for Yoong Liat to decide. Very Happy

Thanks, Shapeless.

I think it is very important to know what the correct answer is. So it matters to me.

Oh okay then.

But I would still prefer "being taken" as inseparable here: as in

The children enjoy...what? being taken....where? to the zoo.
