Now for the tartan
First I just wanted to give another heart felt thanks to everyone for their participation. Now for the main reason for question. I participate in Traditional Highland Games. These include such things as the Caber Toss and Hammer Throw. Because of the historical nature of the sport, all athletic events must be performed in a kilt. So I am trying to find the tartan that would most closely match any ancestory I may have. Any ideas?

I am new here and hope I am following protocol, or should I have made this a new thread?

Thanks again guys Very Happy

noquarter, See what kind of responses you get here. If they're helpful, there's no need for a new thread. But if you want to expand the range of answers, perhaps a thread in the Europe forum might be helpful. Or maybe the General forum.

That's great - a Highland games-man! I've looked in my Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia and it didn't have anything, BUT!... the Collins Guide to Scots Kith & Kin did have Longmuir listed. Unfortunately there is no clan name attached, but it does mention the districts, Ayrshire and mid-Lothian. It also say 13th C. so there are old roots somewhere.

You can also look to your mom's and your grandmothers' names. At least I know that the Clan Cameron accepts into the clan anyone whose father, mother or grandmother was named Cameron or one of the many septs & associated families. If you don't want to list those here, you can PM me and I'd be happy to look them up for you. Mr. Piffka was interested in geneology and has several reference books. As it happens, though neither of us is a Cameron, we're both descendants of associated septs, so we joined them, though I could also have joined the Gordons, the Craigs, the MacPhersons or the Russells. It often works out that way and then you choose whichever tartan or clan history is most appealing.

CLAN MAP - SCOTLAND
CLAN MAP - SCOTLAND . . . If necessary, copy it to your hard drive and enlarge it there for greater legibility. There are many more branches of these clans. If I can find the site in the bookmarks, I'll post it here. For example, Simpson is a sept of Clan Fraser. AND they wear the Stewart tartan. Go figure!

Piffka - I hope you'll be in Edinburgh 10-30 August for THE festival!!! I'll post the URL for that info, etc., on the thread you posted above.

BOOKMARKS - Scotland
Here are some bookmarks for clans, tartans, etc. Haven't looked at them in a while, but there's probably some interesting info among them.

Great stuff, Charli! I've been browsing the website where the map came from for about an hour. I wasn't able to get it to come up clearly when I moved it to Word, so I just looked for it. Smile

I'll now go and investigate these other links. You do find good ones!

Over PM's I think we found a clan for noquarter. I'm hoping he'll come back and tell us that he's decided on one.

I love watching Highland Games....never tossed a caber before, but I have tossed a few capers, mostly on smoked salmon platters.

MAP URL
Piffka - I just looked in Google a minute ago for the map URL - I didn't have it handy. Anywho, it came up immediately and here it is for anyone else who is interested. I could post the map much, much larger on A2K, but I don't think that's fair to use up all that "space." Before, when I was thinking someone could download the map to their hard drive, I had in mind into a software program such as Picture Publisher (the file on this computer where it resides), Adobe Photoshop, WebEx, Xn, etc., where it could then be enlarged. THIS is probably better:

Oh! Cool! I found the same map from Robert Gunn's History of Medieval & Ancient Scotland. That's where I was reading for so long!

Hello PaleoBarbie -- Sorry! I just checked and it's only got surnames of the British Isles.
