These sad news bring back memories of the two years I spent shoveling coal. It also makes me remember an old film that describes the conditions perfectly.
This incredible film (1931) gives me goose pimples every time I think about it. In 1948-49 I worked in a French coal mine (one kilometer down) that used to be a German one. Same primitive conditions, same tension between the French and the Germans (and the Arabs).

In our mine, when there was cave-in, the rescue team worked without stopping. The widows of the missing miners were paid triple salary until the men or the corpses were brought back to daylight.
