Can we use the pronoun she for ships, boats and countries?

Many thanks.

In English ships and boats are referred to as she.

Not so for countries.

she
Sorry, chai - "she" is used for countries quite often - references to America and to England as "she", and use of the possessive "her" abound, although the usage is less common than formerly.

WWII Germany was referred to as "the fatherland". As far as I know, all other countries are generally referred to as female.

The old joke is that warships are referred to as "she" because it costs so much to keep them in powder and paint. I don't recall ever hearing of a ship or boat referred to as male.

Flags are also referred to as "she". "She's a grand old flag."
