Can depression be cured? I understand that it's caused by chemical imbalance. Does taking medicine just control the condition or does it cure a person of depression after a certain period.

What is the best medicine for depression that can be bought from a pharmacy?

Many thanks.

There are prescription drugs which need to be monitored. You can't just take them one month, go off and resume whenever. There are also herbal suppliments that you can try too. And of course regular exercise helps too.

Some forms of depression are caused by a biochemical imbalance, while other forms are not. In those cases, where depression is caused by a chemical imblance, medication frequently ( but not always) eliminates the signs. Rate of onset of relief is affected by the dosage, the mode of action of the drug and the specific brand name ( or generic )medication used.

A physician should be consulted, where a therapuetic approach
is indicated.

As mentioned before, some forms of depression can be alleviated through drugs.

Typically, the drugs affect one or more neurotransmitters. While primary care doctors can prescribe the medications, they are not (IMO) well enough educated on which drugs treat which symptoms. Also, these drugs typically have some troubling side effects.

See a specialist who can help diagnose the condition and prescribe the correct medication.

Also, studies have shown that a combination of drug therapy and talk therapy has the best outcome.

Cognitive behaviour therapy (and exercise) also work damn well, as do some other psychotherapies, depending on the triggers for the depression.

Measurable changes in brain chemistry occur with good therapy, also.

Thinking of drugs only is a fault very much present in the USA, I find (and, to a slightly lesser extent, in Oz, where I come from).

Each person is different, and some doubtless require drugs, however to think ONLY drugs is nuts.

By the way, depression often resolves by itself, anyway...though a good assessment is very important if symptoms are debilitating.

Relapse occurs reasonably frequently, though good therapy is more effective in relapse prevention than medication alone, in most cases.

When the depression lifts, regardless of the approach, be it medication, exercise, cognitive therapy, or a combination of them, I believe one is exhilerated by the mind starting to notice the world around, without the ongoing depressive ruminating.
It's that ruminating, like an old fashioned record player's needle stuck in one groove on a record, that makes depression what it is, I believe.
And, just in my own opinion, depression tends to go along with high expectations, for whatever one is ruminating about. If one can truly overcome egocentricity of one's expectations, depression fades. However, this is not true for all depression, especially when it follows mourning the loss of a loved one. I'm just giving my own non-professional opinion, which could be totally wrong. But, these thoughts have helped me in the past, so I'm mentioning them.

I recently read that when a person is very shocked by something, a certain chemical (I forgot the name of the chemical. I can only remember that it starts with 'n'.) is produced in the brain and it causes the incident to be remembered. Is this related to depression?
