The ceiling of the ancient temple rose up majestically to an awesome height.
Rising up majestically, the ceiling of the ancient temple is/was an awesome height.
Should I use 'is' or 'was' in the rephrased sentence, and what is reason for using the word?
By the way, is it correct to say ' ... the ceiling rose ... '?
Many thanks.
Is, if this a monument that exists today; was, if you are describing something that doesn't exist.

Could you please explain in another way as I do not quite understand your explanation?
I'm a non-native speaker and I would like to apologise for being unable to make out what you've written.
Many thanks.
