What do you mean, 'He's gone'?

Is the above sentence fine? Can it be rephrased in a better way?

Possibly,

What do you mean when you say, "He's gone"?

But that is stilted and formal.

The original sentence sounds like normal, ordinary speech. It does not need any improving.
