The second period today is Maths.

Is the sentence correctly phrased?

No. Math is not plural, nor should it be capitalized.

"The second period today is math" is awkward.

I might say, "Today for second period I have math." This is an informal approach, as is your original sentence.

"Math" is American usage. "Maths" is British slang.

I agree Maths should not be capitalized
But maths is BrE, while math is AmE if I'm not wrong.
