Bridge Collapses Into Miss. River
Associated Press 08.01.07, 7:45 PM ET

MINNEAPOLIS -

A freeway bridge spanning the Mississippi River collapsed during evening rush hour Wednesday, sending many cars into the water.

Tons of concrete collapsed and there were injuries, authorities said. Survivors were being carried up the riverbank.

Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge that weren't completely submerged.

The entire span of the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed about 6:05 p.m. where the freeway crosses the river near University Avenue in Minneapolis.

Frightening.

Oiy! Enough with the bridges collapsing already!

Hopefully there aren't to many hurt/killed. That's gotta suck for an evening commute home. Driving along minding your own busines and the next thing you know the bridge drops out from underneath you. Blah! Crying or Very sad

Tangible example of decaying infrastructure--unfortunately with a human dimension.

My mom's fine, my dad doesn't live in that immediate area so I'm much less worried about him. My mom lives VERY close to that area and goes over that bridge often. (Just got off the phone with her.)

I'm glad you spoke to your mom, Soz.

~~~
The photos of that bridge are just freaky. Flat. In the river.
Looks like the school bus situation might have ended well:
Quote:
The bus had just crossed the bridge before it crumpled into pieces, and broadcast reports indicated the children on the bus exited out the back door.
Hope that's the case.
Overall, this seems like it might be less catastrophic than I originally assumed -- only 8 cars and a truck in the water.
Quote:
It was not clear how many people were injured. A burning truck and a school bus clung to one slanted slab, while at least eight cars and a truck were submerged in the river.
Both from latest AP report.
My mom says there are local reports of deaths -- I mean that's unsurprising, but I haven't seen that reported anywhere yet.
More from my mom -- she thinks it's WAY more than 9 vehicles, because traffic was backed up and going 10 mph when the bridge collapsed.
Also a storm is moving in with cloud to ground lightning, will hit the site in about 10 minutes (she said about 5 minutes ago).
She also said the local hospital is triaging and sending people on to another.
CBC radio just reported "at least 3 deaths.
There's a call for blood on the front page of the StarTribune. Hopefully, it's just precautionary.
AP is reporting the traffic part now too:
Quote:
Traffic was bumper to bumper and hundreds of people would have been involved, he said. He said cars backed up as best they could and he parked in a construction zone and was finally able to turn around and drive off the bridge. "It didn't seem like it was real," he said.
