chattering in/on the tree

When he woke up, he found that some of his hats were missing. Soon he heard some monkeys chattering in the tree. He looked up and saw them wearing his hats. He was angry with them for taking his hats. However, he did not know what he should do to get back the hats.

Is 'in' correct or should it be 'on'? Or should the sentence be rephrased?

in is correct. The only part I'd change is "get the hats back". I'm not saying that what is there now is incorrect. We need someone with a better theoretical knowledge of English to address that.

Remember, this is a children's story designed to be read aloud to preschoolers.

You're right. The word 'retrieve' will be a difficult word to them.
