I am trying to locate the city or canton Lorenz Friedrich came from in 1871. The city is in the Alsace Lorraine region.

I know a Friedrich Lorenz, but he's neither from Alsace nor Lorraine.

Seriously, in 1871, Alsace (the departments of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin) and the eastern part of Lorraine (now the department of Moselle) were annexed to Germany.
So we have to add the French departments Meurthe-et-Moselle, and Vosges to Lorraine.

Seems quite difficult - if you knew the port of embarkation, you perhaps have a better chance.
