The play ended. The audience left quickly.

When the play ended/had ended, the audience left quickly.

In joining the sentences in bold, should I use 'ended' or 'had ended'?

Present tense ended
Past tense had ended...

Not sure.

I think ended sounds better if you are describing it as if it is happening now, as you see it.
