Use food (singular) when you are talking about food generically, that is, the topic of food in general.

Frozen food stays fresh for a long time.

Eating good food is important for health.

You can buy food at the supermarket.

We cannot live without food.

Use food (singular) preceded by an article when discussing a particular kind of food.

Cheese is a food made from milk.

Bread is a very well known food made from wheat.

Rice is a food that needs to be cooked.

The food I like best is beefsteak.

Use foods (plural) when discussing multiple types of these things.

Cheese, milk, yogurt, butter and cream are all foods made from milk. They are called "dairy foods".

Meat, milk and eggs are all foods that come from animals.

they are almost interchangeable, but since foods implies many various types , its the only one that is collectively plural

"Breakfast foods vary all over the world"

"In America bacon is lately considered to be an unhealthy breakfast food"
