I wanted to be the first to break this news.
I guess I was wrong about the number of fatalities and also the story isn't exactly breaking.
Here's some info
It's breaking all right.
Estimates of the dead range from 1 to 200?
(google news)
One news station is reporting the plane slid off the runway, across a busy street before slamming into a gas station. The report said 170 passengers & six crew were on board.
Most likely that # will change once the officials investigate.
Edit: I read gus' post. What I found above was from a different source.
This breaks my heart - apparently part of a larger picture of brazilian airline woes. The whole thing about short runways in this day and age...

A longtime friend has friends in the brazilian air industry; I'm assuming they're all online with each other about this mess.

I was on a flight and we were stopped, ready for takeoff, and I could hear the engines getting louder & louder & louder, but we weren't moving. All of a sudden it was like the pilot released the brake and the plane sorta skidded or skipped and that plane was moving at a high rate of speed. I would have gotten scared but someone told me ahead of time what to expect due to the runway being too short. That was in Mexico.
Just a couple of weeks ago I was returning from Nevada and the pilot told the passengers we had to stop for fuel because we were heavy (fully loaded with passengers & luggage). He explained the plane can't be fully fueled or it would be too heavy and we wouldn't make it off the runway because the runway was too short. I had a window seat and we lifted off real close to the end of the runway.
Yack.... a lot of contraints meeting..
I love Mexico, but I do remember people kissing the ground (stewardesses, as they were called then, saying their rosaries) upon landing in TJ....
That was flying Aeronaves..
Well, wait, I don't mean to dump on Brazilian airlines, per se.
It is still a sad situation overall. I really hate when things like this happen.
I suppose, those who have died and their families don't like it either
My neighbor works for a USA airline (I won't name it) and he is also part of a team from the airline that responds to air plane crashes involving their company. He is part of a support group that consists of airline personnel, counselors, & priests. They have a special room at airports that is for the family members and the support group is there to try and help the family cope with the situation. They provide them with food and water, tea, & coffee. It is very emotional for everyone involved.
It broke my heart when I turned on the news this morning and heard about the crash. It is so sad when things like this happen and I feel for the families and friends of those that were lost.
My running trail takes me by a major US airport each day and it always makes me think of vacations and trips and traveling the world.... and then something like this happens and now it will probably make me think of something completely different....
