There must have been some snoozin' curators at that museum or they weren't very ethical. That is too obviously a fake -- it looks somewhat around the period of "The Potato Eaters" but even if Van Gogh was sedated, and he did imbibe, he could never paint that badly. He more likely would have painted over or destroyed that work.

Sorry, I tried to find a decent repro online but this size spreads the page and was the only one close to adequate -- there's some spurious light coming onto the surface by a photographer who obviously was imbibing.

BTW, I don't know about the statement "painted by one of his peers." Maybe they meant it was painted on a pier during a very bad storm.
