Jenny fell ill. She ate some unclean food.
Jenny fell ill after she ate/had eaten some unclean food.
Which verb/s should I use?
Many thanks.
Jenny ate some bad food and died.
Jenny nibbled on a piece of sweet corn, which had toxic insects inside, and suddenly her insides turned to mush and she perished.
Jenny gave excellent head but her lipstick contained lead and George died from the lead-poisoning.
He was smiling as he exited this planet.
This advice isn't free, by the way.

To be serious for a moment: Both are correct. "Ate" is past tense, "had eaten" is in the perfect tense. The choice really depends on the context.
